Project 1_Hailee Loar

These pieces are my favorites out of all of the scanned images displayed. I appreciate the symmetry and mirrored aspects of the objects. I also like the use of natural and interesting objects. The first photo almost looks like a scientific illustration and I like how an animal specimen was used for art rather than research. I think the most important part about it is the elements of contrast. The black and white creates balance in the photo and draws your attention to the center where the two circles are the focus point. I say this because the reptiles on either side are the same and they act as a sort of border. The reptiles in the middle are positioned in the center and although they are the same object, they are two different views. The balanced nature of contrast reminds me of yin and yang. The second photo also displays symmetry and once again I appreciate the natural objects used. I like the dark contrast of the leaves paired with the white of the flowers. There is something very natural yet dream like to this piece. Lastly is the scanned image of the book. I love this because the artist made a collection of objects look otherworldly and obscure. Once again a mirrored effect is used and I think it makes the image aesthetically pleasing and adds into the mystic theme of the piece.

Final Image

My project embodies a sense of unease and surrealism. It represents the parallel between animal and human. There are also themes of Native American culture and religion. I used symmetry to draw the focus into the middle where there is a white sign. This sign represents anything and nothing. Although there are no words on the sign, the message can be anything you believe. The animals are looking at the viewer and it makes you feel like they are waiting for your answer. The top of the piece shows bones, black sky, and a red moon. This adds onto the uneasiness and mystic themes of the project. I manipulated the images using the spot-healing brush, desaturation, eraser, and brush tool.
